American Sign Language
I was just thinking the other night how I need to scrapbook and write down all of the things that Ainsley is doing and has done so she can remember them . . . along with us! I got to thinking that even though she has signed from an early age - I don't have any video or pictures of it! How sad! The one we talk about the most is how she would "forcefully" sign PLAY when someone was holding her and she wanted to get down! I think that was about 10 months or so. So tonight I set out to get some "SIGNING PICTURES"! Not so easy with a 3 year old that I'm SURE has brain damage!
! ha! A lot of the signs "we" know are in motion so thought I would stick with mostly the alphabet . . . so here we go!F(she's also starting to sign Family w/the other hand - 2 F's)
K(One of her favorite signs for her Cuz Kendra!)
L("Like the shape of an L on her forehead")
U(of course, it doesn't need to be ON your eye!)
X
As you can tell she is saying "x" in this picture - I always play a game with her to help her remember the signs and this one is "X is going to GET you!" So, of course, she always has to "get" me when doing this sign. For some reason, a few of my pics didn't download - so that's why we are missing some letters!
So who else out there signs with their kids? I know Carly signs with Gavin - he is SO FUNNY!! I would be interested to hear how you incorporate it into fun learning or games - I forget to practice with her as much as I should.
If any of you are interested in this - I HIGHLY recommend these "Signing Time" DVD's
You can click on this link for a little intro http://www.signingtime.com/intro/
I love to watch them with Ainsley so I can learn too!! We have them all! I've been able to use a little bit of it at work too when we happen to have the "right" patients. They are really encouraging the use of ASL along with regular learning with special needs kids (Down Syndrome kids and of course with kids that cannot talk either permanently or temporarily since we get a lot of kids in with tracheostomy's.) I'm not sure if I blogged about this or not - but the funniest thing happened a while back when my patient was deaf and her parents only spoke SPANISH!! It was the first time I ever SINGED in SPANISH!! ha!! But it felt good that I at least knew a LITTLE of each to try to help communicate with them.
Happy Signing!!

I was just thinking the other day that it would have been great to have something like xanga when my kids were small. What a great way to record memories of them, complete with pictures and save all those precious memories. You could make a special xanga for each child and put in stories special to each one. If the stories were funny or cute but "not for sharing" you could make them private so that you are the only one who could see them. I have been meaning to tell my sis about this idea because her girl is still so young. Well, that's my two cents worth.... I think it may be overpriced.
Those are so cute. I did signing with my kids but only things like "more" "all done" "eat" "drink" and a cople others. Emma did really well and picked it right up but Joseph wasn't as interested but he finally started. I have not continued once they learned how to talk probably my bad. I think it is great that you are keeping it up with Ansley. ryc: Yeah I am not much of a flower person either, but he hasn't sent flowers in years so I guess I can try and enjoy them before they die..hahah:giggle:
Those are great pictures. That's a great thing to teach your kid. We did teach Kaleb some when he was little, and we had a few videos. We didn't do it so much with the girls though. I have taught Roxie to sign "more". It is so cute when they can't talk yet, but they are able to sign something.
RYC: I graduated first in my class of 115 students....not exactly huge, but still an accomplishment I guess...haha.:goodjob:
I haven't tried knee socks since I was a kid. They might be cute now because they are trendy, but at the time I was FORCED to wear them, they were NOT at all cool!
I'm not particularly fond of the pj's my hubby got me for Valentine's Day because of the sleeve thing. The first thing I asked him was "why did you get me sleeveless???" (I would never wear sleeveless...especially to bed!)...but I kept them anyway and didn't say much because he was proud of his purchase and I didn't want to disappoint him...haha.
Oh, and I always find those pesky hairs in the car mirrors too!
That is awesome...we may need to check out those DVD's.
Hi Becca! I think that's amazing that kids can learn to talk through sign language, before they can actually form words. I remember Ainsley doing it when she was a baby and I have seen Gavin do it also. I hope I can do that with my kids, when I have them, Lord willing! ; ) RYC: Yes I did make Dst Mngr! Yaay....I hope it continues to grow from here. I will see you on Wednesday night! Much love
I love the pictures. I did signs with Connor a lot when he was little. Then for some reason he started to do signs instead of talking. We still watch the videos some and look at our books, but now he is not as interested.
We did signs with Noah, Abbie and Luke when they were babies. It really helped take some frustrations away for them to be able to communicate their wants and needs. Noah really got into it. Or maybe it was us since he was the first we used it with. He made up his own signs and when he wanted to tell us something that he didn't have a sign for he would go through his whole "vocabulary" trying to tell us. When they started talking they used the signs less and we didn't continue to use them. Our goal was communication not to learn ASL. I do kinda wish we'd kept learning.
That is great. I have taught Hope and Gabby some. What started them wanting to learn was the toy that came in the Sonic's kid meals. It had sign lanuage toys for sports, the alphabet, color, and the days of the week. It showed them how to sign that specific thing. Have a good weekend.
That is way way awesome. I want to know what you did to get that started and what book you read, etc, etc....Cute pictures of your beautiful girl, too.
RYC: I'm not sure which little boy on my site you are saying looks like Brad. My cousin, Brad P., had girls (Julianne & Audra) and Cullen's Brother, Kip (from Fort Worth), has a 2 yr old and his name is Trevor. Also, Cullen's other brother, Chad (from Springfield), has a little boy named Spencer and Lil Girl named Savana. I was just curious which one you were talking about. Oh, and my sister, JoJo (from Louisiana), has a lil boy named Jackson and he's also on my site some. Aren't nieces and nephews fun. I LOVE SHOPPING FOR THEM. Love you...thanx for commenting on my site. ~ Julie
Good job Ainsley!!
We did sign with both kids and I used to (haven't in a while) would use sign in our bible studies. I did sign language for many years while I was in school..but like any language, if you stop using it you'll start to forget it. Have you ever seen a deaf person sign the phrase "yeah right". That is my all time favorite thing to sign!! I'll have to show you next time I see you.
I took english sign language in High school and then ASL in College. English sign is a different type of sign language...they teach you how to sign the words like "and" and "is" and to sign complete sentences instead of paraphrasing everything like ASL. So it was a challenge in College when I had to learn a whole new way of signing.
Yes it was a great way to teach the kids new signs in our bible studies. I used to be very consistent with doing it...now not so much.
Great job!! We've learned some sign language, the alphabet, we made up signs for our names and several songs for our "foreign language" in our school but we didn't do it when they were babies. For some reason they would point and grunt and we knew what they wanted.
Very cool...austen was taught to sign the alphabet in kindergarten ...they taught him to sign and also in spanish...it was amazing how he soaked it up...I haven't continued it in any way....I learned to do some signing when I was a kid and have always been interested in it....Ainsley is doing a great job....keep up the good work mom!!!
HOPE you are having a wonderful day!! Love, Twila
I am so glad to see those words signed correctly. You don't always get to see them signed correctly. That's fun to teach!!
YO MO becca...where are you??? WE MISS YOU...
:sunny: GRRR8 to hear from you...glad you are busy and not sick or something....I have soooo many unfinished projects calling my name from time to time...most of the time I ignore them:) This past weekend I did a spring cleaning...I had to ...if I waited till our Spring it would be May before I got anything done...it was just wonderful getting all those nooks and crannies all clean...I still need to get upstairs and do some deep cleaning, but that will have to wait a bit...You take care and look forward to when you update...luv you, Twila
You have such a beautiful family. The pics were great. I enjoyed your parents, they were so kind to us.
